Roads in Alpine Shire

Different roads across Alpine Shire are managed and maintained by different authorities.

While we are responsible for local roads, the Victorian Government Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is responsible for arterial roads.

Whose road is it?

While we are the responsible authority for local roads, the Victorian Government Department of Transport (DTP) is responsible for the management and maintenance of arterial roads across Alpine Shire.

We have outlined different roads on the map below. Our roads are marked in blue, while DTP roads are marked in red (highways) and black.

We also list our roads on our Register of Public Roads.

Sealing of unsealed roads

We receive requests to seal unsealed roads across Alpine Shire, which are placed on our Road Project Prioritisation List. To ensure that we are being consistent, transparent, and fair, we assess these requests on the principle that the construction and maintenance of a road is directly related to the amount of traffic that uses the road.

This principle is used alongside other criteria, including road class, access to public facilities, tourism value, and strategic alignment.

Read more about our methodology in our Sealing of Unsealed Roads Policy.
