Our Alpine Shire Rural Directions Strategy (RDS) provides direction on the future use and development of rurally zoned land in Alpine Shire, including small settlements and rural localities.
What is the Alpine Shire Rural Directions Strategy?
Our draft Alpine Shire RDS helps guide our rural land uses over the next decades to balance opportunities for economic growth with protecting, caring for, and enhancing the unique landscapes of Alpine Shire.
Our draft Alpine Shire RDS aims to clarify:
- Locations of strategically significant agricultural land in Alpine Shire;
- Preferred location/s for competing land uses in the rural zones to ensure they do not compete with strategically significant agricultural land;
- Actual and preferred settlement boundaries for all settlements not addressed in the Alpine Shire Land Development Strategy 2024;
- Preferred location/s for renewable technology to ensure they do not impact or compete with strategically significant agricultural land;
- Locations of valued significant landscapes;
- Preferred future locations of freight, manufacturing, energy, or logistics based on assessment of strategically significant agricultural land; and
- Preferred location/s for agri-tourism.
How did we engage?
We appointed a consortium consisting of SGS Economic Pty Ltd, CoFutures Pty Ltd, and RMCG Pty Ltd to undertake our draft Alpine Shire RDS. Background research and analysis of the key issues will identify opportunities around the rural geographical areas.
An Issues and Opportunities Paper has been prepared to identify several challenges and opportunities around rural land use in Alpine Shire. The Paper focuses on selected rural towns, small settlements, and rural localities as identified in our Alpine Shire Land Development Strategy 2023.
We engaged with communities on the Issues and Opportunities Paper between June and August 2025.
Our draft Strategy is now available for feedback online via Engage Alpine.
