On Saturday, 15 November 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a recall for a range of decorative and coloured sand products as they may contain asbestos.

Alpine Shire Council's Transfer Station in Porepunkah has the facilities available to safely dispose of asbestos, including the recalled sand products.

Community members needing to dispose of these products must fill out Council's Asbestos Waste Disposal Form and book a time for safe disposal.

The ACCC states that sand that is still in its packaging must be placed in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double taped securely before taking it to a disposal facility.

The ACCC also states that individuals should wear personal protective equipment when handling the sand, such as gloves, masks, and disposable overalls.

Community members can access the Asbestos Waste Disposal Form and book a time for disposal by visiting https://www.alpineshire.vic.gov.au/residents-ratepayers/waste-recycling/transfer-stations#asbestos-disposal

Hard copy forms are also available at Council's office in Bright, as well as their libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty, and Myrtleford. Completed hard copy forms must be given to Transfer Station Attendants upon arrival.

The Porepunkah Transfer Station is open from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
