Residents living in rural and regional areas of Victoria are encouraged to complete the RACV My Country Road survey, which gathers data to inform RACV's advocacy on road safety.
The 2026 survey identifies 52 roads across Victoria that are considered dangerous, including the Great Alpine Road between Wangaratta and Bright.
However, survey participants have the option to identify their own roads when filling out the survey.
The 52 roads were identified by RACV together with the Australian Automobile Association using data collected by the Austroads Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP).
AusRAP rates roads across Australia on a five-star scale, where one star is the least safe and five stars is the most safe.
This data is displayed on a public map, with further information provided about each road.
Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, said that living in a regional area with limited public transport options meant that residents relied on safe roads to take them where they need to go.
“Roads can be made safer through timely maintenance and necessary changes, such as implementation of crash barriers and duplicate lanes,” she said.
"Our crew of seven Civil Works team work hard to maintain our local roads, so it's incredibly frustrating when the roads that are managed by the Department of Transport and Planning continue to be poorly maintained.
"While Alpine Shire Council is strongly advocating to the Victorian Government to commit to sustained, multi-year maintenance funding on the roads that they manage, community members can also advocate for safer roads in their towns by filling out this survey."
