As the Alpine Shire enters into the declared Fire Danger Period on Monday, 17 November 2025, residents are encouraged to prepare their homes in line with recommendations from Country Fire Authority (CFA).

These recommendations include pruning shrubs and cutting overhanging branches from trees, getting rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs, and loose bark, and keeping gutters clear of leaf litter.

To support fire preparedness, Council invites residents to dispose of their green waste for free at their Transfer Stations in Mount Beauty, Myrtleford, and Porepunkah.

This service is offered in addition to the weekly kerbside pick-up of green lidded Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, encouraged community members to take this opportunity to clean up their properties before summer.

"One of the most fortunate things about living in Alpine Shire means that we have terrific access to nature in our very own yards," she said.

"But this comes with its own risks, particularly when it comes to fire."

"Now's the time to start looking at our trees, our gardens, and the spaces around our houses to see what needs to be pruned, cut, and removed so that risk from fire is reduced and danger to our properties in times of emergency is minimised."

The following restrictions apply for the free green waste weekend at all Transfer Stations:

  • Maximum two cubic metres per customer, per day

  • Green waste must be clean, free of wire and contaminants

  • Branches must be 200mm in diameter or less

  • Root balls must be clean of dirt and stones, and 300mm or less

  • No stumps will be accepted

All items larger than 300mm or too dirty will be considered hard waste and charged accordingly.

High traffic is expected, so residents are asked to be patient as Transfer Station Attendants support all members to dispose of their green waste.

Disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated.
