Alpine Shire entered into the declared Fire Danger Period on Monday, 17 November 2025, meaning that Country Fire Authority (CFA) has restricted the use of fire across the region to prevent potential disasters.

Fire Danger Periods start at different times for different municipalities across Victoria, with dates decided based on local factors such as the amount of rain in an area and grassland curing rate.

CFA has stated that the upcoming summer is going to be warmer than average with increased risk of fire, despite recent wet weather.

With the Fire Danger Period now in place, Alpine Shire Council's Local Laws Officers are assessing residential, commercial, and farming properties for fire hazards.

It is the responsibility of property owners to ensure that their properties do not pose a risk to themselves, their neighbours, and their communities.

This includes ensuring that they maintain their lawns and gardens so that they limit the risk of starting or spreading a fire.

Fire hazards include, but are not limited to:

  • Grass that is 100mm above the natural ground surface;
  • Overgrown weeds, bracken, and blackberries; and
  • Excessive undergrowth

If a property is considered a fire hazard, the property owner will be issued with a Fire Prevention Notice.

Once issued, property owners will be notified of a strict date to comply.

Under section 41E of the Country Fire Authority Act 1958, failure to comply will result in a fine of $2,035.10.

CFA has guidelines to support community members to prepare their homes this summer on their website: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/how-to-prepare-your-property

Community members are encouraged to help prepare their neighbourhoods by reporting hazardous properties across Alpine Shire.
