Council welcomes support for Porepunkah and Alpine region

Alpine Shire Council has welcomed yesterday’s announcement of a $2.5 million support package from the Victorian Government for Porepunkah and the wider Alpine region.

The funding package will provide direct assistance to local businesses and community wellbeing, as well as support for events, Council programs, and tourism marketing to help drive visitation and economic recovery. 

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, said the announcement would bring much-needed support to the community in the wake of the tragic events of 26 August. 

“On behalf of Alpine Shire Council, I welcome the State Government’s support for Porepunkah and our wider region,” she said. 

“The events of 26 August have deeply impacted our community, and this $2.5 million package will provide much-needed relief for local businesses, events and tourism, while also supporting community wellbeing. 

“We are grateful for this recognition and investment, which will help us recover and strengthen our economy.  

“Above all, it shows our community that we are not alone as we work together to rebuild.” 

The $2.5 million package includes: 

  • $5,000 grants for affected businesses 

  • Support for local events and Council programs 

  • Tourism promotion and marketing to increase visitation 

  • Wellbeing and business support initiatives 

Council will continue working closely with the Victorian Government, local businesses, and community organisations to deliver the support where it is most needed.
