Following a strong community response to last year’s Aquatics and Indoor Stadium Feasibility Study survey, Alpine Shire Council is now inviting residents to review the draft Study that will shape the future of local sport and recreation infrastructure.
The draft Alpine Shire Aquatics and Indoor Stadium Feasibility Study 2025 presents a comprehensive evaluation of the Shire’s existing infrastructure, including pools in Bright, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford, and indoor stadiums in Mount Beauty and Myrtleford.
The study highlights the importance of these facilities in supporting active lifestyles, community wellbeing, and recreational participation.
Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, said the study provides a strong foundation for future planning and investment.
“Our aquatic and indoor sports facilities are much-loved community assets, but many are ageing and facing increasing pressure,” she said.
“This study gives us a clear picture of current conditions and future needs, and now we want to hear directly from our community.”
Key findings from the draft study include:
- Most facilities are functional but ageing, with increasing maintenance demands.
- Strong community demand for year-round access to aquatics facilities, particularly for lap swimming, rehabilitation and learn-to-swim programs.
- Limited availability of indoor stadium space for training and competition.
- A proposed staged investment approach to extend the useful life of existing assets and plan for future upgrades.
The feasibility study was informed by extensive pre-draft consultation, including 232 community survey responses, stakeholder interviews, and internal workshops.
Council received funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria to support the development of the study.
Council officers will now undertake further engagement to gather feedback on the draft study.
Cr Nicholas said feedback will help refine the final version, which will guide future infrastructure planning, funding advocacy, and asset management.
“We’re committed to ensuring our facilities meet the needs of our growing and active communities,” she said.
“This is your opportunity to help us ensure our planning for future of sport and recreation in Alpine Shire is hitting the mark.”
