Alpine Shire Council is inviting community members to have their say on the design of new public amenities in Tawonga South, with construction of the long-anticipated project planned for the upcoming financial year.
The project follows years of community advocacy, including a petition with more than 800 signatures calling for public toilets, increased parking and improved visitor infrastructure in the town’s main business area.
In 2023, Council took a key step forward by purchasing land on the Kiewa Valley Highway to enable the development.
Concept designs and building renders have now been prepared, with community feedback now open to help guide the overall site design.
The proposed amenities have been designed to accommodate both everyday use and peak visitor periods, and include two standard toilets, two ambulant toilets, one universal access toilet and a urinal servicing two users, allowing up to seven people to use the facility at one time.
The draft layout of the site also includes 11 car parking spaces, with two accessible bays and nine standard bays.
Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, said residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to review two design options and share their preferences on the building’s appearance, including colours, materials and overall style.
“This project has been driven by strong community support over a number of years," she said.
"We’re pleased to be at a point where the community can now help shape what the facility will look like, and make any other suggestions for what they'd like seen included on-site.”
Community members can view the plans and complete a short survey:
- online via Engage Alpine: Tawonga South Amenities | Major Projects | Engage Alpine
- in person at libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty or Myrtleford, or at Council's Customer Service Centre in Bright
The survey will close on Sunday, 28 June 2026.
