Council has welcomed funding from Sports and Recreation Victoria to boost key local sporting projects.

Mayor Peter Roper said the funding will support future planning for sport and recreation projects, and provide $800,000 towards the Great Valley Trail, linking Bright and Harrietville.
“Council has been successful in securing $30,000 towards an Alpine Active Sport and Recreation Plan,” he said.
“This will allow us to plan sport and recreation facilities across the Alpine Shire, both existing and proposed, to identify where we should prioritise investment in infrastructure in the coming years.
The Great Valley Trail project has received an $800,000 boost, on top of the existing $1.3 million contribution from the Australian Government.
“This will reduce Council’s commitment on this $2.6 million project to just $500,000, freeing up funds to use on other projects,” Cr Roper said.
“The Great Valley Trail project will deliver approximately 14 kilometres of family-friendly bitumen sealed shared-use trail.
“This exciting project will complete the 22 kilometre link between Harrietville and Bright, and extend the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail to the base of the Alps.
“The trail will follow the Ovens River and the Great Alpine Road and will create an iconic trail, ideal for cyclists and walkers, significantly contributing to North East Victoria’s visitor economy, as well as boosting community health and wellbeing.
“We thank the Victorian Government for this funding and look forward to delivering these important projects for our community.”
