A section of Bicentennial Park in Mount Beauty will receive a facelift in time for the ANZAC Day, with works scheduled to make a number of improvements.

Located between the playground and library, the memorial garden hosts the Dawn Service in Mount Beauty each year.

Following community recommendations on opportunities for accessibility improvements to the area, Council will include a hard stand surface around the base of the flag pole, new pathways, accessible seating, and safer pedestrian access from the library through to the playground.

The works will also address significant drainage issues that lead to flooding in wet months.

Alpine Shire Mayor John Forsyth said once the initial issues have been addressed, the surrounding garden beds will also be transformed this spring with the addition of up to 300 native plants.

"Once completed, this entire area of the park will be invigorated, and provide community members and visitors with a beautiful space to sit, reflect and spend time with their family and friends whilst enjoying views of the lake," he said.

"A wide selection of plants in the garden will also be native to our region, and will be accompanied by educational signage to help educate our community on the type of plants that thrive in the Alpine Shire."

The plant selection will also be guided by the CFA's Landscaping for Bushfire: Garden Design and Plant Selection; a guide to support people when planting in high-risk bushfire areas as a means of preparing your property against bushfire risk.

Initial earthmoving works in the garden are expected to take up to three days, starting on Tuesday, 11 April.

Access to this area of the park will be closed, but the surrounding parks and playground, and the carpark, will all remain open.

There will be increased truck movements during the works, and we ask everyone to take care when walking, riding or driving through the car park.

This project has been partially funded by the Victorian Government through Emergency Recovery Victoria's Recovery and Resilience grant program in response to the Black Summer Bushfires.
