Kiewa River Trail Extension to Confluence

The Kiewa River Tail (formerly Pebble Beach Trail) has been extended a further 0.9 kilometres along the Kiewa River West Branch in Tawonga South. The project was completed in late-2020.

The Kiewa River Trail is located very close to the Mount Beauty and Tawonga South townships, resulting in an easily accessible track for locals and visitors alike. The extension to this track now takes users to the confluence of the West and East Branches of the Kiewa River.

The even, sealed surface enables accessibility for users of all ages and fitness levels, including those with mobility issues. The track provides users with expansive views of the Kiewa River and Mount Bogong, as well as improved access to the river for recreational and training activities.

Construction of the initial trail extension was completed in late-2020, and Council is seeking funding to deliver an extension to the existing trail.

Council will apply for funding from the Victorian Government's Regional Infrastructure Fund to deliver an extension to the existing Kiewa River Trail from the current end point of the Kiewa River Trail back to Embankment Drive via Damms Road. The scoping and design works were completed last financial year and this project is ready for construction.

The fund supports enabling and transformative infrastructure projects that are strategic and align with the relevant Regional Economic Development Strategy.

The Kiewa River Trail Extension project is estimated to be $1,062,500 with $850,000 to be sought from grant funding, and the remaining project costs of $212,500 being met by Council.

We had 279 total response to our community survey - thank you to everyone who shared their views!

Respondents were asked to select between three possible names - Pebble Beach Trail, Kiewa River Trail and Corner Pool Trail.

There was also an option to select ‘Other’ and nominate a different name.

The name Pebble Beach Trail secured the largest number of individual votes by a small margin.

However, as a grouping, Kiewa River Trail plus other similar versions which made reference to the Kiewa River had the largest number of votes.

60 respondents suggested names that differed from the three proposed names.

Approximately 30% of respondents who selected “Other” suggested a name that recognised the region’s Traditional Owners but didn’t use the word ‘kiewa’, which translates to ‘sweet water’.

Trail naming - call for community feedback

The newly-completed extension needs a formal name, and Council is now calling for community feedback.

Council is seeking to establish local community preference between three options to help guide the ultimate naming of the popular trail, currently known informally as the Pebble Beach Trail, which reflects the previous end point at Pebble Beach.

The community has secured funding to install permanent signage along the trail, and in order to finalise this signage, the trail is in need of a formal name.

Council is calling on the Kiewa Valley community to shaire their preference between three possible names - Kiewa River Trail, Pebble Beach Trail and Corner Pool Trail.

The trail starts from Embankment Drive, with the current end point now 900m beyond Pebble Beach, with aspirations for the trail to be connected along the East Kiewa River back to Damms Road in the future.

The significance of Pebble Beach (formerly Corner Pool) will be recognised in an art installation at the site.

Because the path now extends past Pebble Beach, the Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association has suggested naming the trail Kiewa River Trail to reflect the path in its entirety.

The project was funded through the State Government's Pick My Project program and was delivered by Council last year on behalf of the community and the Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association, which successfully applied for the grant.

The survey closes at 9am on Monday, 25 January.
