Time to prepare for Seniors Festival

PLANNING for the 2019 Seniors Festival has started, and Alpine Shire Council is encouraging businesses and community groups to host an event for the festival.

Running for the month of October, this annual event celebrates seniors with events, activities and offers across the state.

Manager Economic and Community Development Elaine Burridge said the festival encourages older residents to get involved and be active in their community.

“Every year Council distributes a calendar of events for seniors in the Alpine Shire on behalf of local groups and clubs who want to host Seniors Festival events,” she said.

“It’s time for our local businesses, community groups and organisations to consider how they can contribute to the festival with an event, activity or special offer for seniors.”

Businesses and community groups who wish to have their Seniors Festival event listed on the Alpine Shire Seniors Festival Calendar can contact Council at info@alpineshire.vic.gov.au.

Free public transport is available for Victorian Seniors Card holders from Sunday 6 October to Sunday 13 October and includes all metropolitan and V-Line services with bookings required on V-Line services.

Community members are also encouraged to consider nominating an older person for the 2019 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

“This is a great way of acknowledging the contributions of older people who make a difference in their community, maybe a leader, a behind the scenes organiser or a person who does the hands on work,” she said.

“We were very excited in 2015 when Bright’s Peter Hopper was awarded the Victorian Senior of the Year for his services to the community, it would be lovely to see more of our hardworking community members acknowledged for their services.”

Information on the categories and nomination form for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards can be found at Seniorsonline website.
