Plans for improved safety on Gavan Street, Bright

Safety on Bright’s Gavan Street will soon be improved with road resealing scheduled and lane remarking planned to commence this month.

VicRoads will reseal a 650 metre section of Gavan Street, between the Bright Sports Centre and Anderson Street roundabout (both eastbound and westbound), on Thursday, 15 March. The road will remain open with traffic control in place while workers are on site.

Following completion of the scheduled reseal, Council plans to remark the lane dividing lines to create a new layout that will improve safety for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and Gavan Street residents.

“Currently, on each side of Gavan Street, there is a narrow parallel parking lane and two shared-traffic lanes,” explains Alpine Shire Council’s Director Assets, Will Jeremy.

“The planned improvements would see the dividing lines remarked to create a widened parking lane, a separate bicycle lane and a single, more freely flowing, motorist-only traffic lane.

“The changes will make it safer for residents living along this section of Gavan Street to enter and exit their driveways and alleviate disruptions to traffic flow when they do so.

“Importantly, the newly created bicycle lane will provide necessary separation between cyclists and motorists and eliminate the risk of collision caused by traffic overtaking protruding vehicles that are parked in the currently narrow parking lane”.
Pedestrian safety will also be improved with the addition of kerb outstands in two locations and with a shorter walking distance for pedestrians crossing Gavan Street.

Fifteen additional angle parking spaces will also be created as part of the planned layout. Current speed limits will remain unchanged.
