Supporting growth for business and our communities

7 August 2017

Alpine Shire Council awarded grants to 27 community projects and 49 tourism events in 2017/18, assisting vital projects that support our communities and boost business and the economy.

“Each year, Alpine Shire Council awards grants to our local clubs and organisations to help them carry out the important work they do for our communities,” said Alpine Shire Mayor Ron Janas.

“Whether it’s rescuing injured wildlife, teaching a Scout Group or improving facilities for our Senior Citizens, we’re pleased to be able to support those who dedicate their time to initiatives that enrich our Shire.”

Councillors voted to award 27 community projects with grants totalling $79,535 at the Council Meeting in Mount Beauty on 1 August.

Among the successful applicants were: the Alpine Little Athletics Centre for the purchase of new hurdles; the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed, for the purchase and installation of a dust extraction system; the Wandi Bright Food Swap for its seed sewing and harvest initiative; and the Myrtleford Playgroup for the purchase of new equipment and toys.

Councillors also voted to award grants to 49 tourism events at the combined value of $130,400, plus $108,300 worth of Alpine Shire Council logistical support. The events funded represent roughly one-third of events in the Alpine Shire. In 2016/17, a total of 145 events were hosted throughout the Shire, injecting about $42.5 million into our economy.

“Our economy benefits enormously from event activity, particularly as it encourages tourists to come back year after year,” Cr Janas said.

“We are continuously looking at how to improve the quality of events for everyone, whether you’re a resident, business owner or tourists, and investing in infrastructure like the Alpine Events Park in Bright is one way we are working to improve our capacity for the whole region,” he said.

Popular events returning in 2017 include Spartan, Brighter Days and the Rod Run in Bright, La Fiera and the Myrtleford Festival in Myrtleford, the Swagger Music Festival and Wandi Nut Festival in Wandiligong, the Mount Beauty Music Festival and the Dederang Picnic Races.
