Pioneer Park Netball Court launched

5 May 2014

THE new Pioneer Park Netball Court was officially launched on the weekend, finalising months of hard work by the United Bright Football Netball Club (UBFNC), community members and Council.

The court was completed in time for the first home game of the season last month. Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) officially opened the facility on Saturday (3 May).

Alpine Shire Council Mayor Peter Roper said the $114,000 project was the result of collaboration between the UBFNC, community members and Council, made possible by funding from the State Government.

“The result is fantastic, bringing the netballers into the heart of the park’s recreation precinct and helping to create a sporting hub,” he said.

“The UBFNC has been a key driver behind the project, providing an in-kind contribution of around $73,000, along with a $10,000 cash contribution, enabling construction of a retaining wall, shelter and seating and additional concrete area.

“This is a high quality facility that can be used under lights for training and games, and has the capacity to support the installation of an events marquee over the court and adjoining concreted area.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in every stage of this project – the result is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when Council, clubs and community members work together.”

The project has been funded through a $60,000 State Government Sports and Recreation Victoria grant, and $20,000 from Council’s Capital Works budget. Council contributed a further $24,000 to equip the site with the capacity to support events, extending the concrete area beside the pavilion.
