Martley Street trial daytime closure will go ahead

7 March 2014

POREPUNKAH’S Martley Street will be closed from 10am – 2pm during school days, for a trial period of six months.

Council voted to proceed with a trial closure at it its March meeting, following extensive community consultation in the lead-up to the decision.

Director Infrastructure Services Ian Ellett said boom gates will be installed in coming weeks to allow students from Porepunkah Primary School vehicle-free access between the school grounds and oval during school hours.

“Council began investigating the possibility of a trial closure of Martley Street in 2012, following a request by Porepunkah Primary School to consider ways to improve the safety for students crossing between the school and oval,” he said.

“We understand that this issue has attracted strong views on either side, and hopefully a time-based trial closure achieves a balance between full-time closure and keeping the road open.

“Following the trial, we will assess its success, engage with the community and decide where to go from there.”
