Myrtleford’s Barwidgee Creek Rail Trail Bridge closure

28 February 2014

THE Barwidgee Creek Rail Trail Bridge in Myrtleford will be closed to all cycle and foot traffic for approximately two weeks, due to flood repair works currently underway.

The bridge was badly damaged during two separate flood events in December 2010 and March 2012.

Works to the 100-year-old structure are underway, but instability in the bridge’s approach has caused the closure for safety reasons.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Ian Ellett said while Council had hoped the bridge would be open to traffic during repairs, this instability meant it was unsafe for users.

“The approach has been undermined during construction and a section has fallen away,” he said.

“We are working with North East Catchment Management Authority to install a temporary dismount detour across Barwidgee Creek, which we intend to have in place in the next few days.
