NERDS receives state recognition

A REGIONAL training scheme pioneered by Alpine Shire Council has won accolades at the recent Local Government Professionals Conference.

The North East Regional Development Scheme (NERDS), operates in cooperation between 11 north east councils – Alpine, Benalla, Indigo, Mansfield, Murrindindi, Moira, Shepparton, Strathbogie, Towong, Wangaratta, Wodonga and the North East Region Water Authority.

NERDS was awarded top prize for Innovative Management Initiative at the LG Pro Conference in Melbourne on 24 – 25 February and is in the running for a national award.

Council’s Manager Governance Sonia Sanchez del Rio said the award was a welcome result after some hard work getting NERDS up and running.

“The initiative came about in an effort to offer staff training and development that didn’t require going to large regional centres or Melbourne,” she said.

“We liaised with online learning and compliance system “Learning Seat” to establish a regional training portal, administrated through Indigo Shire Council, giving us access to more than 300 online courses.”

NERDS has coordinated the delivery of face-to-face training in partnership with organisations such as VECCI, LifeWorks and LGPro.

Ms Sanchez del Rio said Council is now working toward rolling out the program to the wider community at a fraction of normal training costs.

“This program is a fantastic way to ensure our staff receive top quality training at a very good price,” Ms Sanchez del Rio said.

“It’s also a very good example of the positive results that can be achieved when Councils work together toward a common goal.”

Council was recently recognised for its work in the North East Regional Development Scheme

Council's Chief Executive Officer Ian Nicholls, Manager Governance Sonia Sanchez del Rio, Manager Development Services and Amenity Nick Vlahandreas and Director Corporate and Community Trevor Britten celebrate the recognition of the North East Regional Development Scheme at the LG Pro Conference in February.
