MP Jacinta Allan praises Council at opening

Victorian Minister for regional and rural development Jacinta Allan has praised Council for their professionalism saying Council was ‘building on the great reputation that the Alpine Shire already has’.

Minister Allan was speaking at the official opening of the upgrade to the Alpine Visitor Information Centre (VIC) in Bright last Wednesday (25 August).

The $146,000 upgrade will provide a boost to the local economy by promoting local businesses at the Alpine, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford Visitor Information Centres.

Other features of the upgrade include

  • New digital advertising signage which has already had an impact according to local businesses
  • Upgrade to phone systems allowing 50% more calls to be captured, a significant boost to customer service
  • New projector that is available to community groups and businesses
  • Improved design of centre including new work benches and display cabinets
  • New signage to support the shire wide promotional strategy that includes regional maps in all three VIC’s

Minister Allan said that utilising technology in the upgrade was a step towards a new age customer service centre, servicing visitors 24 hours a day.

Minister Allan also praised Manager Visitor Information Centres Jason Sharp and his team for maintaining a high standard of service whilst working on the upgrade.

While local businesses are already benefitting from the upgrade, the vital tourism industry is also expected to receive a boost.

The improved advertising could potentially boost visitor expenditure above the $170 million that was spent by visitors in the Alpine Shire in the 2008/2009 financial year.

The upgrade was funded by a Regional Development Victoria grant ($109,500) and by Council ($36,500).

Mayor Cr Nino Mautone, Cr Daryl Pearce, Cr Narda Cain, Manager Strategic Services John Carter and Jason Sharp attended the opening.
