Revitalisation of Myrtleford commercial area  Printer Friendly

Revitalisation of the Myrtleford commercial area has been a long term goal of the community and Council.

Central to achieving this outcome is the development of the former police station and residence located between Myrtle Street (Great Alpine Road) and Clyde Street, the primary retail area.

In late 2009 Council purchased the site from the Victorian Department of Justice and removed the buildings with the intent of creating an interim open space.

Council also engaged with the Myrtleford community to determine how the new open space should be treated.

 February 2012 update

The Myrtleford community has agreed that the new open space will be a green passive space, providing views from the commercial area to the open space of Jubilee Park.

Inside the space will be a place for gathering for events as well as markets.

Hardscaping works began in early 2012, with the aim to have the work completed in time for Myrtleford's La Fiera Festival in May 2012.

The final concept plan can be seen below:

February 2012 update

Council awarded the tender for the hardscaping works to T.J Chick Builders in late 2011, with works starting on Monday, 6 February.

Fencing was put in place and earthworks carried out to achieve the new levels and prepare the site for paving and stonework.

Additionally the irrigation system was modified during this time to suit the new layout.

The project will roll out from February to early May with the site to be ready for the La Fiera Festival.

Works completed in the second half of February include pouring of the chessboard.

This needs to cure for two weeks before polishing the concrete to bring out the colour.

Efforts are currently focused on completing the stone walls, which need to be finished before the remainder of the concrete paving can be installed.
