WALKING tracks in Bright and Porepunkah have received an $80,000 facelift to make them more accessible and user-friendly.

Sections of Cherry and Canyon walks have been upgraded, and steps constructed along the Porepunkah River Walk.

Council’s Environment Officer Cameron Alexander said the works have improved access for all users.

“Sections of Cherry Walk have been resurfaced and steps have been constructed to improve accessibility,” he said.

“Along the Canyon Walk the Farrington Walk loop has been widened to 1.2metres to make it suitable for prams and groups of walkers.”

Cherry Walk is now reopened to the public after being closed for the harvesting of the adjoining pine plantation.

Walkers can make the experience as interactive as they like with self-guided brochures available at the Bright Alpine Information Centre.

The brochures link with interpretive signs along Cherry Walk, allowing walkers to identify plant and bird life and learn more about native flora and fauna.

Councillor Narda Cain said the improvements allowed residents and visitors to make the most of the great outdoors regardless of the season.

“No matter what time of year, making the most of our walking tracks is a great way for people to improve their health and wellbeing, experience our stunning environment and enjoy physical activity,” she said.

“Walking tracks are important recreational assets across the Alpine Shire and Council understands the need to keep them accessible for all users.”

The total cost of works was $80,000, funded out of the Department of Planning and Community Development flood recovery grants.

Members of the River Walks Committee and Upper Ovens Valley Landcare Group (UOVLG) have worked with Council to develop the interactive displays.
