Home>Council>Major projects>Rejuvenation of Mafeking Square, Bright
| Mafeking Square is a significant landmark in the Bright township, including the memorial clock tower commemorating the contribution of local service men and women lost in battle. The square is located at the junction of four roads and is recognised as the heart of Bright.
The redevelopment of Mafeking Square is being driven by a range of factors including ageing and inadequate infrastructure, opportunity to improve safety, opportunity to improve amenity for pedestrians and cyclists and timely rejuvenation.
The preferred concept suggests a change to the urban structure, primarily, the straightening of Ireland Street and the shifting of the green wedge to adjacent the Uniting church. The concept provides a balanced response for facilitating access and movement of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles while minimising disruption to car parking and improving access to public open space for every day use. The concept is not a dramatic shift from the current configuration, but rather an adjustment to an urban structure more suitable to contemporary expectations for access and amenity.
The concept is currently on public exhibition until Friday 20, July and Bright community members are invited to make formal comment during this time. Formal submissions can be made in writing to: Simon Jones - Strategic Projects Officer Alpine Shire Council P. O. Box 139 Bright Victoria, 3741. or via email to simonj@alpineshire.vic.gov.au
Should no significant objections be received the concept will be put up to the August Council meeting for adoption. Detailed design will then follow in preparation for seeking financial support from the Victorian State Government for implementation. | |
