Solar North East Program  Printer Friendly

The Solar North East Program operates across the municipalities of Alpine, Benalla, Indigo, Mansfield, Towong, Wangaratta and Wodonga with the aim of providing residents and businesses with support and information on how to reduce their energy consumption and switch to solar power.

This is a community solar hub program where registrants benefit from bulk purchasing of solar energy systems.

Solar North East registrants will receive free energy assessments to determine the most suitable solar system to generate their own electricity, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Solar Ambassadors are also available to provide information on solar energy systems and household energy reduction.

Upcoming information sessions
Solar North East will be hosting a third round of information sessions in July and August across the region.

Alpine Shire residents can drop in between 3:00 and 7:00 pm on Tuesday, 7 August at the Alpine Visitor Information Centre, 119 Gavan Street, Bright.

Bring your electricity bill along to discuss your usage, ways to reduce energy consumption and how to select an electricity retailer.

Why go solar?
In addition to the environmental benefits of harnessing clean, renewal energy, there are many good reasons to install solar photovoltaic systems, including:
* Reduced electricity bills – generating electricity to power your home means drawing less electricity from the grid. There are also feed-in tariff incentives if you export more electricity than you use.

* Generous government incentives of up to $6,000 – the Federal Government's Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) assists households to purchase and install renewable power systems. Solar North East participants will have this amount deducted from the total cost of their solar energy system.

* Lower greenhouse gas emissions – a 1.5kW system typically saves approximately 2.7 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year (compared to coal powered electricity).

* Protection from future electricity price rises – it is expected that electricity prices will increase substantially in coming years. Creating your own electricity mitigates the effect of these rises.

* Improve the value of your home – adding a solar photovoltaic system to your home or business increases the value of the property.

Project partners
A benefit of bulk purchasing is having the research partly completed for you. Solar North East received select tenders and undertook extensive assessment of several solar system installers, considering pricing, equipment quality, servicing standards and warranties, amongst other things.

ZEN Home Energy Systems has been selected as the project partner to install solar photovoltaic systems for Solar North East.

To ensure accessibility to the program, Solar North East has partnered with WAW Credit Union to offer low-interest secured and unsecured loans specifically for solar home energy systems. Conditions apply.
